Commerce
Accountancy, Business Studies and Economics: the route into chartered accountancy, finance, management, economics and entrepreneurship.
This is probably you if
- You are interested in money, markets, organisations and how businesses run.
- You like structured work with clear right answers (accounts) as well as argument (economics).
- You are considering CA, CS, CMA, B.Com, BBA, Economics, banking, finance or starting a business.
A typical week
Accountancy problems most days, Business Studies theory to learn, and Economics graphs and data. The fifth subject sets the pace: Mathematics adds real work, Informatics Practices adds lab time.

Routes this stream serves
Exams to know
Strengths
- A direct line into professional courses (CA, CS, CMA) that can start in Class 12.
- Mathematics or Applied Mathematics keeps Economics Honours, B.Com (Hons) and data programmes open.
- Lighter laboratory load than Science, leaving time for entrance preparation or a skill subject.
Costs
- Commerce without any Maths closes Economics Honours at most universities and many BBA and data programmes.
- Accountancy rewards daily practice; falling behind is hard to recover from.
- The stream is crowded, so cut-offs at top colleges are high.
Accountancy and Economics at Class 12 are demanding; CA Foundation fails a majority of candidates each cycle.
CLAT and UPSC are open to all streams, and Economics is a popular optional subject for UPSC.
