For parents and guardians

Help them choose, without choosing for them

Your experience matters. The map has changed since you chose: streams are flexible, CUET decides most university admissions, and new subjects exist. Here is how to help.

1

Gather the facts

Get the school's subject blocks in writing. Sit with your child through the test report and the planner's routes panel. Read the stream guide for the path they lean towards.

2

Ask, don't tell

Which subjects did you look forward to this year? Which did you dread? What would you regret closing off? Listen to the answers before offering yours.

3

Set the boundaries

Say early what coaching, fees and travel the family can support. A plan built on resources that will not exist creates pressure in Class 12 that no subject choice can fix.

What has changed

  • CBSE no longer fixes streams; subjects can be mixed if the school can timetable them.
  • CUET, not board percentage, decides most central university admissions.
  • Applied Mathematics exists for students who took Basic Maths or do not need calculus.
  • Skill subjects (AI, IT, design, finance) are board-examined and can be the sixth subject.
  • Four-year honours degrees and integrated programmes (law, management, teaching) admit straight after Class 12.

A timeline for Class 10

  1. October to December: take the test, read the stream guides, talk to two seniors.
  2. January: get the school's blocks; build three combinations in the planner.
  3. February to March: decide, write down why, submit preferences.
  4. After the Class 10 result: confirm the combination; use the change window in the first weeks of Class 11 if something is clearly wrong.

Questions parents ask

Should my child take Science to keep options open?

Only if they can sustain it. A combination chosen for prestige that produces poor marks closes more doors than it opens. Use the test and the planner to compare real options.

Is Commerce or Humanities a weaker choice?

No. Delhi University's highest cut-offs are routinely in Economics, Political Science and Psychology, and the professional accountancy track starts from Commerce in Class 12.

When do we need to decide?

Most schools collect subject preferences between January and April of Class 10. Blocks and seats are finalised after the Class 10 result, with a short window for changes in the first weeks of Class 11.

What if the school does not offer the combination?

Ask whether enough students want it; schools open sections when the numbers justify it. Otherwise decide which subject matters more, or consider another school early.

Do it together

The Full test takes 20 minutes. Sit beside them while they take it, then open the report together. The report link can be shared with a teacher you both trust.
