A parent's guide to Class 11 subject choice
How to help without deciding for them.
What has changed since you chose
Streams are no longer fixed. CUET decides most central university admissions. Skill subjects exist. Applied Mathematics exists. Many "safe" careers of twenty years ago are crowded and many new ones are not. Your experience is still valuable; the map has changed.
Your actual job
Ask questions, gather information, and make sure the decision is made on evidence rather than fear. Get the school's blocks. Arrange a conversation with two seniors. Sit with your child through the test report and the planner. Then let them decide, within what the family can support.
The conversation to avoid
"Take Science, you can always switch later." Switching later means repeating subjects and often a gap year. A combination chosen for sustainability keeps more doors open than one chosen for prestige.
Signs to watch for
A child who cannot name one subject they like in a combination. A combination that exists only because a cousin took it. A refusal to look at the routes panel in the planner. These are signs the decision is being avoided, not made.
Money and timing
Decide early what coaching, fees and travel the family can support, and say so. A plan built on resources that will not be there creates pressure in Class 12 that no subject choice can fix.
Guidance based on the CBSE scheme of studies and public exam bulletins. Confirm rules with your school and the official sources before deciding.
