Two-level Maths and Science from Class 9: what it means for Class 11
The Standard and Advanced levels under NCF 2023 and how they may connect to Class 11 choices.
What is changing
Following NCF 2023, CBSE is introducing Standard and Advanced levels in Mathematics and Science from Class 9, with new NCERT textbooks arriving year by year. Class 10 already has Basic and Standard Mathematics.
The link to Class 11
Today, Mathematics (041) in Class 11 normally needs Class 10 Standard. If two levels extend to Science, similar conditions could apply to Physics, Chemistry and Biology. CBSE has discussed, but not finalised, two levels in Classes 11 and 12.
What to do
Read the circular for the year you enter Class 11, ask your school which Class 9 and 10 levels feed which Class 11 subjects, and if in doubt choose the Standard or Advanced level in Class 9 and 10 to keep Class 11 options open.
Guidance based on the CBSE scheme of studies and public exam bulletins. Confirm rules with your school and the official sources before deciding.
