Skill subjects explained, and whether universities count them
What they are, how they are examined, and the CUET catch.
What they are
Skill subjects are CBSE's vocational subjects: Artificial Intelligence, Information Technology, Financial Markets Management, Design, Mass Media Studies, Yoga, Food Production and dozens more. They have a board exam with a large practical component and a lighter theory load.
How they count
They are full subjects on your marksheet and can be one of your five main subjects. As a sixth subject they are the safety net under the replacement rule.
The CUET catch
Most central universities map CUET domain tests to academic subjects. Only a few skill subjects, such as Mass Media Studies, have a matching domain test. If you are aiming at central universities, keep at least four academic subjects and use the skill subject as the fifth or sixth.
Good uses
A skill subject related to a target field (Design for design school, Financial Markets for finance, AI for computer science) is a preview and a portfolio. A skill subject chosen only for marks rarely delivers them.
