Positional grades (A1 to E)
The nine-point grades CBSE prints next to marks, based on rank among all passing students in a subject.
CBSE grades are positional: A1 is the top one-eighth of passing students in that subject, A2 the next eighth, and so on down to D. E means essential repeat. They are not fixed mark bands, so the same marks can get different grades in different subjects.
