Understanding the RIASEC interest model
The six types behind your Holland code and why they predict enjoyment.
The six types
Realistic (Doer): hands-on work with tools, machines, plants or sport. Investigative (Thinker): analysing and solving problems. Artistic (Creator): expressing ideas through art, writing or performance. Social (Helper): teaching and caring for people. Enterprising (Persuader): leading, selling and starting things. Conventional (Organiser): working with numbers, records and procedures.
The hexagon
The types sit on a hexagon, R-I-A-S-E-C. Neighbouring types often go together; opposite types (R and S, I and E, A and C) rarely do. A profile with two neighbouring types is usually more settled than one with opposites.
What it predicts
RIASEC predicts what you will enjoy, which is strongly linked to persistence and satisfaction. It does not predict ability, which is why GradRun pairs it with aptitude questions in the Full test.
